Is the whole "organic" label just becoming a fad? The fastest growing thing in the food industry is all natural and organic foods. How does this make the giant food companies feel? They don't want to be left behind so they are having to get creative. A new version of Doritos have been introduced to the food industry as "organic".
So how about we compare the ingredients on the new organic Doritos and the non-organic version. Both are almost identical in terms of nutrients: 150 calories, 8 grams of fat, one gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein. Looking at only the nutrition label doesn't always tell us everything we need to know. That's why you need to take a good look at the ingredients list!
Here is the ingredient list for Doritos Simply Organic White Cheddar:
And here is the ingredient list for Doritos Supreme Cheddar:
Corn, Vegetable Oil (sunflower, corn, and/or canola oil) maltodextrin (made from corn), salt, whey, buttermilk, natural and artificial flavors, Romano cheese (cow's milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), cheese cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt enzymes), onion powder, corn starch, dextrose, tomato powder, spices, sodium caseinate, lactose, artificial color (yellow 5 lake, yellow 6, yellow 5, red 40, blue 1), lactic acid, citric acid, sugar, garlic powder, red and green bell pepper powder, and skim milk.
As you can see, the organic Doritos is made of organic ingredients for the most part. There are no artificial flavors, only natural flavors. They are essentially the same, so it seems to be more of a marketing gimmick. The organic version does eliminate the controversial artificial colors that the regular version has.
So the question is...
Are organic Doritos good for you?
No! It's a 150-calorie snack, not a healthy food. At least if you crave Doritos and some squirt cheese occasionally, you can now choose the Doritos that have a slightly better ingredient list. Balance is key!
