Problems with Fad Diets
We've all heard of the Atkins diet, the cabbage soup diet, South Beach, Paleo, NutriSystem...the list goes on and on. Most people are looking for a quick fix to a lifelong problem. I'm not saying you can't lose weight on these diets but more times than none, those who have been on these diets gain all their weight back and sometimes more. We have to change our behaviors and our mind set. Below are just a few problems with some of these diets.
Quick dramatic results due to shifts in water, not fat. For every molecule of glycogen, your body produces 3 molecules of water. Your body makes glycogen from the glucose coming into your body from carbohydrates. This is where you get the most energy. When you stop eating carbs or reduce them dramatically, you're more than likely losing water weight since you are no longer producing glycogen and water.
Forbidden Foods If I tell you "Don't eat any chocolate on this diet". What is the first thing you think about? CHOCOLATE! And probably how much you want it. Forbidden foods only increase the risk of binge eating.
Low Calorie Diets On low calorie diets, your body can go into a protective starvation response therefore holding onto fat and not giving you enough calories for your basil metabolic system to run properly. Your BMR is what your body needs to maintain its internal activities while at rest. 65% of your total calories goes to help your body run your liver, muscles, brain, heart, kidneys and other organs. If you're depriving your body of the energy it needs to function you will have problems ahead.
Loss of LBM, Lean Body Mass
Diets too low in carbs or calories could cause you to lose lean body mass rather than fat. Low carb or calorie diets could also put your body into a state of ketosis which causes dehydration, nausea and electrolyte imbalances. You may also find you have no energy on diets like this. When we don't get enough carbohydrates in our diet, we won't have any energy.
The best way to lose fat is to add carbs to burn it easier.
Fat is burned under the flame of carbohydrates.
Slowly begin to change your habits. Clean eating will give your body the fuel it needs and when you feed your body the right foods it will operate the way it was intended to.
I'll say it again, BALANCE is KEY! One day at a time, one meal at a time, one workout at a time. You can do it!
Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 1st John 4:4
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
