PMS! How to curb the cravings
That time of the month can really drain you physically and emotionally. It's been a normal week and bam you're hit with the uncontrollable desire to eat anything in your path and cry about it. Below are just a few tips that could help with the cravings, bloating and your mood.
Vitamin D
It's very important to get the calcium your body needs. To do this you also need vitamin D since calcium can't be absorbed without it. Studies have shown that a diet full of vitamin D could reduce the risk of PMS by 40%! That's worth it's weight in gold :) You can obtain vitamin D though fish oil and some actual fish including, herring, salmon, mackerel, halibut, tilapia and tuna steak. Other foods high in vitamin D are mushrooms, eggs, yogurt and tofu.
Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes are full of nutrients and are an asset to our diet. They are packed with potassium, vitamin A, vitamin C and B6 which supports energy. Out of the "potato" family the sweet potato is a strong anti-anflammitory. It's well known for its hormone balance affects so add some sweet potatoes to your plate for dinner before your cycle begins.
Chocolate
Your hormones are shifting right befdore you start your period which result in the cravings. Ever wonder why you crave chocolate before your period? Your body is deficient in magnesium, and dark chocolate is one of the richest sources of magnesium there is. Magnesium levels fluctuate during your cycle. The higher the estrogen or progesterone, the lower the magnesium. Increasing magnesium either in your diet or by supplements can help relieve PMS symptoms, such as headaches, bloating, low blood sugar, dizziness, fluid retention and sugar cravings. The key is moderation and balance. Enjoy a little chocolate. Don't go crazy!
Ginger
Ginger has been effective in relieving pain associated with menstrual cramps. It's also used for nausea and an upset stomach, which can sometimes occur with menstruation.
