Why do I keep eating the chips and salsa when I'm full?!

We all love chips and salsa, right? My husband has a salsa he makes called Lava and it's hot! Hence the name :) People LOVE this stuff. It's very hot and people are sucking in air or grabbing some milk after they eat it, but they keep coming back for more. I love Mexican food. It's one of my favorites. Why is it that after I've eaten my entire meal and I'm full, that I keep eating the chips and salsa? I'm going to answer this for you.

When you eat spicy food, your stomach produces more gastric juice (a thin, clear, virtually colorless acidic fluid secreted by the stomach glands and active in promoting digestion). Gastric juice sends a message to the hypothalimus saying "We're hungry! Feed us!". The hypothalimus coordinates both the autonomic nervous system and the activity of the pituitary, controlling body temperature, thirst and hunger. So when the spicy foods trigger the hypothalimus telling your brain you're hungry, you keep eating the chips and salsa!

The next time you're eating spicy food whether it's Mexican, Indian, Thai or Chinese and you've had a big plate of it and you want more, know that you're not hungry and that it's a false message.

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
