Yes, it's the weekend and the time we go out to dinner, hang out with friends, take the family out or have a BBQ. I love going out to a nice restaurant with my family or friends but this can be frustrataing when you are trying to live a healthier lifestyle. But don't fear, a healthier lifestyle doesn't have to be hard. Instead of being afraid of what you will eat, make a plan!

Check the Menu!

I always check out the menu online before heading to the restaurant. Go ahead and decide on what you will be eating that will satify you in advance. This will help you from feeling unsure about what to order and making a bad choice. Stick to your guns on what you have decided on at home and you'll feel better after dinner.

Eat a Snack

If you know you’re going to a restaurant, BBQ, wedding reception, or party where there will be a lot of unhealthy choices, have a snack before you go so you’re not starving. It will be a little easier to say no when your stomach isn't growling.

Ask Questions

You never know how the food is being cooked so don't be afraid to ask your server questions. This way you know what you are ordering. Find out if the meal is enough for two and split it. Ask how it's cooked and request it to be healthier. If you meal comes with a cream sauce request a dijon mustard instead. Ask for your dressings on the side. Choose steamed vegetables instead of sauteed since you never know how much oil is being used. Order a double vegetable or substitute the potato with a side salad or fruit. If you are really getting serious about your diet then forego the bread when they offer it.

Limit Alcohol

Alcohol has a lot of calories for little to no nutritional value. Decide in advance to set a drink limit when you get to dinner. If you are ordering a drink, keep it to lower calorie drink like a vodka and club soda with a lime or a glass wine. The fun sounding drinks ususally contain a ton of sugar.

The key is to keep it balanced. Enjoy life, food and friends but don't make life about food. So try out these tips this weekend and let me know how you did! I want to hear from you!

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
