TIPS TO OVERCOME WEEKEND OVEREATING

I am guilty of this! I eat really good during the week and relax on the weekend. I always say that balance is what we should aim for in our diets. My family tends to eat out on the weekends as I cook most weekdays and am ready for a break. We are alway busy hosting people in our homes and going to barbecues, dinners, celebrations, etc. The list goes on! There’s not always the best choices or options when it comes to eating at all of these functions. I used to consider it no big deal. I will eat what I want on the weekend and not worry about it. Monday is always ahead and I will get back on track! It never failed that by Sunday evening, I felt miserable. The damage that I had done Friday, Saturday and Sunday had caught up to me! So how do I fix this so I can still relax and enjoy my weekend but not feel terrible by the end? Here’s a few tips that have helped me...

1. Don’t skip breakfast! Be sure to continue eating a good breakfast even on the busy weekend that is a balance of complex carbs, fat and protein.

2. Enjoy but don’t over in indulge. If you are at a special event or BBQ enjoy the special dessert your friend made or the dip you have never tried but don’t eat yourself into a black hole. I say if you have never had it, then definitely try it!

3. Grab a snack. Be sure to eat a snack so that you don’t get violently hungry that you are ready to eat anything in front of you! This also keeps your blood sugars level so that you don’t have a lack of energy mid day.

4. Stay active. If you’re like me, you may not go to the gym on the weekends. It’s a time for me to rest and spend with my family and friends. But don’t be lazy. Make it apart of your family/friend time. Go hiking, for a walk, a bike ride, clean out a closet and most recently I found that a Yard Sale is like working out!

5. Bring the healthy dish! If you are invited to a potluck or are having friends over, volunteer the healthier option so you know you have at least one healthy option to choose from. This doesn’t mean you can’t eat anything else, but at least you don’t have to fill up on fatty dishes that put you in a slump.

Again these are all experiences that I have had. We all mess up! When we do, thank God for his grace. When we make good choices thank him for the strength he give us!
